It's about time we have something to discuss, as two articles I've found have small Modern Family Season 7 spoilers. This article contains the first hints as to what we might see for Alex this upcoming year (well, at least the first part anyway). There's not a lot of details (heck they haven't even started filming yet – the table read for the first episode was just today) but there are couple of items for speculation.
First of all, it looks like to some degree it will not be an easy start to life at CalTech for Alex. This isn't that surprising, since the student body as a whole at CalTech is much smarter than at her high school (i.e. a school full of Alexes (and Sanjays) - no average Lukes or Haleys or even a lot of only merely above average students (me...) around to make Alex look better – remember their admission acceptance rate is only about 8 percent, and that's of the well above average students – unless it's as a joke or dare Luke's not applying two years from now).
The question is will Alex's worst fear that she'd be at the bottom of the ladder (“Grill, Interrupted”) come true, or will it simply be a matter of her only being average by CalTech's standards? Or will it all be in her head (i.e. maybe she has only one bad day that leaves her doubting herself briefly) and she still ends up at or at least near the top of her class?
And what about her relationship with her family? Another spoiler article indicates she'll lean on her family members for support about this (that's more family time than I thought she would have this season, given as noted earlier she's not going to be home much) but just who can help her, given she's always been at a higher academic level than anyone else (Mitch is probably the closest to Alex from that standpoint)? And if that fails...
Not to mention there's new talk of a love interest – for real this time? And will it be a (seemingly unlikely) long-distance relationship with Sanjay or will it be with someone else (Jason from the tour last year?)
The final question for now: what is the time frame for all of this – is it all going to happen in a couple of early episodes (still leaving open the possibility I feared last week that Alex's role severely diminishes as the season goes along) or will these be season-long stories (and we may actually get to see her campus life be a key part of this year)?
I'm not sure what I think the answers will be (any could go in any direction but truth be told I'm still leaning pessimistically) but there's still a lot of time for things to get into focus.
