"Open Your Eyes, And Look Outside. Find The Reasons Why."

I've updated my post from a few weeks ago about "Can't Elope" to reflect that it's now going to air on April 10th (next Wednesday).   Again, sorry for the delay - I haven't felt much like writing during this brief hiatus: I'll go with the seldom seen "pre vacation blues" excuse (and I'd rather not talk about how brutal those last couple of days of work before it started this past weekend were) and leave it at that.

One thing has been added - some promotional photos have been released as well.   There will apparently be an attempt at a wedding ceremony (or reception) for Haley and Dylan, however while Alex will be there, it doesn't look like she has much of a role, for now (again, Bill is in this episode so that might change).

Also, Haley ends up in the hospital at some point (when isn't certain - it could be a flashback to before the wedding). and while I suppose it's possible this could be for the birth of their twins, I think it's more likely to be a false alarm - I don't see the actual births happening until the finale.  (It would potentially be good news for Alex if I'm wrong - it would give her a better shot of being a focus for the finale - otherwise it's possible her graduation story falls through the cracks.)

I'll have a lot more to say about this week's episode on Wednesday - I think the potential is there for something very special, but, of course having now said that watch me end up with egg on my face by 9:31 that night.

OK, enough of the updates - time for a little fun, I think.

No, I'm not talking about any April Fools' jokes - I know I changed the blog picture to a test pattern once for that day, but in general I'm not the prankster type, at least on this day.

If you've been reading this blog for any real length of time, you know that I often use the month of April to honor my favorite singer, Avril Lavigne.  (For those who've never taken French, Avril is the French word for April.)  Two of the first four years I've done this blog I spent the entire month using lyrics from her songs as post titles (last year I actually went beyond that, all the way to the end of Season 9 in late May.

Even though this post's title is part of a lyric from "Nobody's Home", I'm not going to be doing that this year (if I have a good reason to though I will use one or two during the month).  Instead, I'm going to do something else that actually relates to Alex.

I'm going to list my top twenty-five Avril songs, and, for each one, I'm going to pair it up with a Modern Family episode that, as best I can figure, most closely relates to something involving Alex.  No, this is not a one-to-one list where the best song gets the best episode, and so on - some of the episodes that match aren't even all that good.   Some of these were fairly easy, while some I had to stretch a bit (or even more) to come up with a match.

If that explanation seems complicated (and, no, "Complicated" is not on this list - oddly I don't really like that song much). hopefully it will become clearer as I go along.

Anyway, here we go:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#1: Nobody's Home - "Double Click"

I actually was tempted to go sarcastic on the first one, and list the 29 Alex-less episodes here.  Instead I went with an episode where she felt alienated by the fact that nobody cared that she had come home from CalTech after her first year there.  It's a bit of a stretch from the story of a teenage runaway, but it does match the family alienation theme, IMO.
----------------------------------------
#2: When You're Gone - "The Closet Case"

This one was easier - Alex's (then) true love (Sanjay) had gone away (and broke up with her), and she missed him.
----------------------------------------
#3:  Here's To Never Growing Up - "Pilot"

Another tough one, as Alex has always been more mature than her years.  So, why not start at the beginning when, by default, she was the least grown up?
----------------------------------------
#4: Smile - "Patriot Games"

"It's been a while, since every day and everything has felt this right."

I believe that line pretty much sums up Alex's feelings as she was kissing Sanjay at the end.

And the song is too feel good (that's not a bad thing, BTW) to use "Under Pressure" here, in spite of the "crazy b***h" line at the start.  Trust me, the best episode will have its day in the sun.
----------------------------------------
#5: Head Above Water - "Goodnight, Gracie"

The title track from Avril's recent album, in which she describes how she felt as she was close to dying from Lyme's Disease a few years ago.  So, I went with the episode where Alex had to first deal with a death of a loved one (her grandmother on Phil's side of the family).
----------------------------------------
#6: Let Me Go - "Clean Out Your Junk Drawer"

And, frankly it was long about time for Alex to break free of her memories of her short (yet still far too long) relationship with Reuben.
----------------------------------------
#7: My Happy Ending - "Written In The Stars"

I already used Alex's breakup episode with Sanjay, so the end of her hopes of getting together with her professor takes this spot.  Plus, the visual of Alex seeing Arvin and Haley reuniting seemed more of a (suddenly) shattered happy ending anyway.
----------------------------------------
#8: What The Hell - "Someone To Watch Over Lily"

One of the few times when Alex really wasn't the good girl, as she helped Haley pull an after hours prank at school.   I supposed I could've gone with the episodes with her brief flings with bad boys (a couple will show up later) but I felt this fit better.
----------------------------------------
#9: Girlfriend - "Clean For A Day"

Actually, I'm not sure if, at that point, Sanjay still had a girlfriend at Stanford for Alex to hate.  But, it did give Alex a chance to let off some steam before rekindling their relationship.
----------------------------------------
#10: Fall To Pieces - "Under Pressure"

In more  ways than one, of course, Alex did fall to pieces here (first at the party, then after Claire said she sympathized with her about her workload.  Not surprisingly, there are other songs on this list to which this episode can be paired as well.
----------------------------------------
#11: Rock N' Roll - :"Best Men"

Electric Light D'orkestra (the band Alex was in at the time) wasn't exactly a rock n' roll band, but it was as close as she'll probably get, at least until she maybe tries a singing career again in a few years (Maybe somewhere down the road if they make a reunion movie we'll see this?)
----------------------------------------
#12: Keep Holdin' On - "Summer Lovin'"

"So far away, I wish you were here.  Before it's too late this could all disappear."

Of course, in the end they would break up (then get back together, then break up again), but at the time Alex was valiantly trying to keep holdin' on to her relationship with Sanjay.
----------------------------------------
#13: Hot - "Sex, Lies & Kickball"

It was either this episode (where Alex tried to get Ben to help male a painting using their naked bodies) or one of the ones with Alex and Bill.
----------------------------------------
#14: 17 - "Dude Ranch"

I probably had the hardest time with this one.  Since the song is about someone reminiscing about a former bad boy boyfriend, I thought I'd choose Alex's first one, the kid she met at the dude ranch.  Plus, the song does reference a swimming pool, and Alex does get teased by him at one in the episode.
----------------------------------------
#15: Give You What You Want - "Do You Believe In Magic?"

The song title is pretty much what Alex did for Ben in this episode.  Granted, it wasn't a one night stand like the song, but...
----------------------------------------
#16: Bigger Wow - "Strangers In The Night"

"Yeah you could show up at my front door on a white horse I'll be ready."

This is the opening line to that song (the next best song off her new album).  I don't know how many white horses were in the engine of Teddy's motorcycle whne he was waiting at the front door for Alex but she was definitely ready after her breakup with Alec.
----------------------------------------
#17: Alice - "Tableau Vivant"

Poor Alex - her art teacher didn't even know her name.  At least until he gave her a B-minus on her end of the year project (thanks to her family throwing her under the bus).
----------------------------------------
#18: Losing Grip - "Putting Down Roots"

Yes, "Under Pressure" would've fit here if I hadn't already used it.  Sadly, so would "Spring Break" and a few others.
----------------------------------------
#19: Sk8er Boi - "The Kiss"

"He's (Jeremy) just a boi, and  I'm (Alex) just a girl.  Can I make it any more obvious?"

That line sounded a lot like the "Notting Hill" line Alex quoted at Jeremy's house, so, there you go.  I have a hard time picturing Alex doing ballet, or Jeremy skating or rocking, though.

[EDIT: Actually, Alex wouldn't need to do ballet - I got the verses mixed up (the line above is from the last verse, the ballet reference is in the first).  The ballet dancer is the girl Sk8ater Boi dumped, not Avril.]
----------------------------------------
#20: He Wasn't - "The More You Ignore Me"

Of course Reuben wasn't what Alex wanted - it showed just how depressed she was that she came to him for a rebound.
----------------------------------------
#21: Things I'll Never Say - "Blindsided"

It's hard to say anything when you have no voice thanks to mono.  Since, for now, Alex isn't interested in a marriage with Bill I can't use anything there yet instead.
----------------------------------------
#22: I'm With You - "Royal Visit"

The night Alex met Bill wasn't exactly a d**n cold night (anything but, thanks to the overcooked bagel bites), but I'm sure she was more than happy he took by her hand (and other parts of the body) and took her somewhere new.
----------------------------------------
#23: Warrior - "A Stereotypical Day"

Another stretch, as it's hard to compare having the strength to overcome a near fatal illness (Lyme's Disease) in real life (Avril) to a painful but rarely fatal illness (mononucleosis) in a fictional world (Alex).  But nothing else even comes this close, does it?
----------------------------------------
#24: Fly - "Spread Your Wings"

This should be pretty self-explanatory, even if you've never heard the song (Avril wrote/recorded the song for the Special Olympics about four years ago).
----------------------------------------
#25: Forgotten - "The One That Got Away"

Apparently Luke forgot that Alex was a member of the family when he made the movie for Jay's birthday eight years ago.  I could have also used "Double Click" (which started things) as well.
