“Upside/Down(side)” - “Do Not Push”

Even though this is the second (consecutive!) episode with a somewhat Alex-centric story, it's basically the first time we get to see how her senior year unfolds, as she attends her first college tour at Cal Tech (along with the rest of the family). So what am I hoping for/hoping not to see this week?

Upside: Some promo photos of this episode (you can see the ones involving Alex here) show Alex interacting with a nerdy guy (including a hug)  – we don't know yet whether he's a fellow high school senior or he already goes to Cal Tech. Either way, maybe he could be “The One” (or at least, a potential friend for this or next season)?

The more important best case scenario I'm hoping for is that Alex does not put all of her eggs in the Cal Tech basket...yet (see below).

Downside: While Alex and Claire are doing the important parts of the tour, Haley, Luke and Phil go off on their own doing typical Modern Family hijinks. As I indicated in my “First Impressions” post last week, I don't want to see the latter overwhelm the former, especially if it ends up hurting Alex's chances to get into Cal Tech (if down the line she ends up wanting to go there).

The second downside is more of a long-term concern. I don't want Alex's college selection process to be a one-episode-and-done journey, especially just 2 weeks into the season. I'm not that worried this is going to happen, but it's still a possibility (she could cave in to her mother's desire for her to stay close to home for college).

Keeping fingers crossed, as always.
