"Even Children Get Older" (First Impressions - "Do You Believe In Magic" - Season 8, Episode 12)

My first thought when I saw in the press release that this episode was going to be a Valentine's Day episode was "Ugh".  Alex has rarely fared well in these episodes - at most she's been a non-factor, at worst she's been practically or entirely non-existent (she only showed up in the credit scene in the first one, "My Funky Valentine", and didn't appear at all in the most recent one, "Valentine's Day 4: Twisted Sister").

Well, at the very end of the synopsis, we find that things are a little different this time - Alex has at least a small story.  However, this description of it is more than a little worrisome:

"Finally, Alex discovers she has a secret admirer who may be a little too involved with family"

What makes me worry about this is that Rainer, Haley's middle-aged weather reporter boyfriend is appearing in this episode (there is a story involving Haley being encouraged to stand up to him about something which may backfire).  What if he's Alex's secret admirer who's "a little too involved with family"?   Yes, it's absolutely insane (especially given the age difference, not to mention I don't think Alex even remotely likes him), but...

Now normally, as I've often said, I want to see Alex's stories be more serious than normal for this show.  But I also want Alex to come out OK at the end of the night whenever there's a serious story, and I fear that won't happen if this story is a serious one.  It's very possible that even a hint of a potential relationship (i.e. Alex really has no interest in Rainer, as seems highly likely, but somehow it appears otherwise) could pose a very deep problem between Alex and her family, particularly with Haley (who has been a lot nicer to Alex the past few years, and vice versa - I really don't want Rainer to drive a wedge between the two of them).

On the other hand, given how little depth and drama they've given Alex this season, it probably will just end up being a comedic misunderstanding and/or it's someone else who actually is the admirer (I was going to say please not Reuben again, but his admiration for Alex is hardly a secret and he's not on the guest character list anyway).

If nothing else, this is more intriguing than Alex and a cat - my head will probably get to spin for the next two weeks wondering what will happen.
